Procedure for Shifting HT Transmission Lines

High-Tension (HT) lines are the towering structures we often see carrying high-voltage electricity, critical for powering industries, homes, and businesses. However, when these lines cut through properties, they can limit land usability and obstruct expansion. We facilitated Volvo’s plant expansion by relocating EHT lines, saving approximately 1.5 acres of land for future expansion. For industries like real estate and manufacturing, shifting HT lines becomes a practical necessity for expansion. While it may sound simple, this task is complex and requires skilled professionals to handle it efficiently. Here’s a step-by-step overview of the process:

1. Site Survey and Planning

The first step in shifting HT lines is conducting a detailed site survey. This involves measuring the line's length and configuration, assessing the terrain, identifying obstacles, and conducting safety checks. The goal is to minimize risks, identify challenges, and determine the best way to realign the transmission line. Proper planning ensures a smoother approval process and successful execution.

2. Developing a New Infrastructure Plan

Once the site survey is complete, the next step is to design the new route for the transmission line. This plan should prioritize optimal space utilization, safety, and minimal disruption to surrounding properties. The plan may involve selecting suitable pole types (e.g., monopoles for tight spaces), determining the number of poles needed, and considering additional towers if required.

3. Application and Approval

With the new route mapped out, it’s time to prepare and submit the application to the concerned authorities, such as the State Electricity Regulatory Commission. This process involves gathering key documents, including site maps, no-objection certificates (NOCs) from neighbouring properties, and a detailed project proposal explaining the reasons for shifting and the new route.

4. Setting Up New Infrastructure

After obtaining the necessary approvals, work begins on setting up the new infrastructure. This includes erecting poles, laying cables, and ensuring the new setup aligns with the current plan and future development plans for the property. Skilled resources and meticulous execution are crucial at this stage.

5. De-energization and Re-energization

Finally, the old infrastructure is de-energized, and the new system is connected to the grid and energized. This process must be quick to minimize power outages for areas relying on the line. Once the new setup is fully operational, the old infrastructure is dismantled and handed over to the relevant authorities, marking the successful completion of the HT line shift.

Shifting HT lines requires precision, expertise, and adherence to safety standards.
